Artist Statement
While a formal meditation on the inherent nature of abstraction in photography, my work embodies the translation of photographic imagery–captured from film stills–into drawings and paintings.

In the drawings, I attempt to activate the flatness of 8mm film by meticulously layering graphite to mimic its contrast and character. The fuzzy quality of film translated into a layered ‘sfumato’ effect persuades the viewer to first respond to the drawings as photographic imagery. This deliberate and methodical replication, when suddenly understood as a drawing, is meant to snatch the viewer’s undivided attention while anointing meaning and value to images of my ancestors’ transition to city life in the Bronx in the 1950’s.

These sequential paintings and drawings seize poetic movements of form, a transitory past and an extended narrative in time. The manipulation of analog film through digital media has fueled my investigation into spontaneous responses to the camera that advance beyond a single snapshot of plaintive memory to reflections of time and movement. Images that were initially caught on film and captured in stills are gradually transposed into layers of glazed paint or graphite.

This body of work reflects my cultural heritage through the filter of American society.
