Artist Statement

I received a Surdna Grant to study life drawing in Florence.Work prior to that time dealt with symbolic imagery creating a personal poetic visual vocabulary. While in Italy I became preoccupied with the figure and integrated that into my work. At the same time, I had a dream about tattoos: that iconography, coloration and symbolism permeated its way into my work. I researched historic flash and added those images along with  sources generated from magazines, online, or books. What was different from earlier work, was coloration. The newer pieces were done on a flesh colored background along with an indigo palette. I work mostly in oil pastel. They are finished drawings and are not intended as a preliminary study for a painting. There is a physical application of the materials which I love. I apply the pastel and can add or subtract color by scraping and layering. Surface is rich and greasy. I have primarily done drawing for years. I prefer a flat surface and large format drawing interests me the most.

The drawings are either panoramic in format, made of 3-5 images to create a visual linear relationship or a large rectangle measuring 50" x 40". The title is an integral part of the work and is incorporated into the piece, not unlike the title of a tattoo on someone. Some of the symbols are directly related to flash while others are political, social or personal.  Certain cultures, utilize tattoos to identify and create a personal history, which these drawings address.

Along with this series, I completed a conceptual piece that involved 26 mannequin hands and each one represented a letter of the alphabet. Each hand has a portrait on it that I felt to be significant for political, artistic, social or aesthetic reasons. The project was about historical and contemporary culture. For example, the letter "C" represented Cassius. ( Cassius Clay). These pieces employ drawing and painting. An installation is included which is about exploring furniture as a vehicle for the same subject matter and is important in creating an environment for the 2D images.
