Artist Statement

Naomi Shigeta

Statement 2008:

I have come to better realize the importance of nature in my life. Whether it is in the heart of downtown, or walking through a park, I can find a place that allows me to forget everyday concerns, and focus on the calm and serenity of the trees, mountains, and waterways that surround me . This is further realized when I find myself in large cities, when moving amongst the tall buildings, where a lone tree or small garden can be an oasis for someone not accustomed to the speed and aggressiveness of most urban areas. It is in these instances where I find the innate impulse to be close to something pure, forgiving, and peaceful. As our world progresses, it is an increasing challenge to find the balance between the drive of daily life and maintaing a place for the nature we often take for granted. These pieces reflect the challenge of keeping balance in life and in my surroundings.
