Artist Statement

These are some examples of "found drawings" I've been shooting on the street. This is material that just barely falls out of step, jumps away or breaks off from what is expected. The unintended forms suggest a variety of artistic tropes, are often funny and sometimes melancholy.  I've been shooting these images for the past few years as I go about my daily business. Later I post the pics to the web.

The second group are black ink wash drawings based on public relations images from China's Yangtse Three Gorges Development Corporation website. They evoke landscapes at the crossroads of nationalist propaganda and eco-rhetoric. (The Three Gorges Dam is the largest hydropower-complex project in the world, taking over three decades to build, and has become a major environmental nightmare).

The third group are colored ink drawings drawn from a series called "Today's News." Their source images are news photos cut from the local newspapers in a small town in upstate New York. Drawing shifts their focus in unexpected ways, removing them from the context of "news". The titles are drawn from the original captions and headlines, and function as an equivocal or tenuous connection to the original stories.
