Artist Statement
Maps and plans, my footsteps as I walk round a city. A 14th-century stone figure, broken ceramic fragments, a Greek potter, fried eggs – they all go into drawings about places. The sheet of drawing paper, cut and folded, becomes a sculpture, thin sheet zinc and brass, etched and chased, knotted and shaped, become sculptural drawings – “volcanoes”. A figure from a Greek vase becomes a cartographer and, map in hand, goes off hunting for Nadia’s pasta, the Roman site, a Romanesque church or a cup of coffee. The bewitched woman walks round the city of Zurich or points to the ancient walls of Piacenza and the Etruscan bronze liver. A personal archive of elements from the past and the present, combined in new work in pencil, graphite powder and paper, in etched and chased zinc and brass.

Artist Bio / CV
From marble to old oil drums to paper (torn, cut and folded) and etched zinc and brass. The underlying thread is drawing. Rebecca Forster’s work combines archaeology, cities, museums, libraries, literature, life today with old maps and plans…
Born in 1960 in St.Albans, England, the artist studied at Norwich School of Art, specializing in sculpture. Her work has led her to spend long periods in Cyprus, Greece and in Italy, in Milan. She now divides her time between England and Italy. Recently she lived in New York for some months, with the support of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant, exploring the city through drawing. It all forms part of her “visual diary”. Various critics have written about her work, which has been exhibited in England, Cyprus, Greeece, Italy, Egypt and USA in solo and group shows.

Solo shows since 2000: Connections – Triangolo nero, Alessandria, Italy. Zinc Volcanoes and Spikey Lollipops – Spaziotemporaneo, Milan. Rebecca Forster: Recent Work: Drawings and Sculptures – England & Co, London. 2001: A Day in a City you don’t know – German Cultural Institute, Bologna. The Sound of the Pencil – Colpo di fulmine, Verona. 2005: The Anna Amalia Library – Triangolo nero, Alessandria. The Sky is Everyones, Observatory “G.D.Cassini”, Perinaldo, Italy. 2007: The Piacenza Liver – Archaeological Museum, Piacenza, Italy. The Cartographer and the Ceramicist – Centro Culturale Eleutheros, Albissola, Italy. The Goddess Nut comes to the Observatory – Observatory “G.D. Cassini”, Perinaldo, Italy.
