Artist Statement

In House for Mandø, I drew with tent poles to construct a life-sized house in 3-dimensions on a tidal flat in the Wadden Sea, (Denmark). In these images, the sculpture is flattened through the process of photography, and the photos present the structure as a series of 2-dimensional drawings that generate an ambiguous sense of space and scale. These drawings document a continually changing landscape as the sea enters the house through doors and walls, with no roof to keep out the weather.

This house offered neither shelter nor privacy, warmth, stability, or security. It was a blending of inside and outside, and a mixing of sea and house, using only the most minimal lines to define its space within the greater expanse of the landscape.

For the earlier project House Frame Experiments, I used a field of snow to contrast with the metal poles. In an interval series of images, I attempt to build a house but get lost in abstract compositions. The snow becomes paper as I make marks, erase, and draw again.

For the recent project Forest Lines, I focused my attention on the curving form of a fallen oak. This tree existed as one line, and I constructed a companion line of wood to interact with it. In contrast to the oak, this line of ‘new’ lumber is smoothly sanded and fit together as a piece of fine furniture. In time this new line will also age, decompose, and recycle into the soil, along with the oak.

A number of my recent pieces have involved linear sculpture—a type of drawing in space. One of the reasons I’ve been working with line in 3-dimensions is that it offers the most variation in perspective when one moves around a piece. Formally, it’s a way to have the maximum range of shapes and forms: when one shifts just a step or two in any direction, the piece can change radically.

I'm also interested in the interaction of sculpture, photography, and drawing. In some cases, photos of the sculptures are not merely documentation but become separate pieces. These photo-drawings can have a different conversation than the 3D structure, and vice versa.
