Artist Statement

Michael Wong, Artist

As an artist, I create work that re-contextualizes history by confronting accepted narratives to reference an alternate truth.

I believe that history is elastic and multidimensional, creating a tension between the perception of the actual and potential. Therefore, as an artist, I make work that provides an alternate view of what happens in the past, present, and future, adding mythology to the provenance of recorded event.

In my recent work, I examine the shifting meanings present in the evolution of the symbolic image from a variety of global contexts.  My drawings address how cultures visually represent archetypal ideas such as life, death, divinity, status, and power over the centuries.  Each period of human development spanning from the ancient past to the present, interprets these archetypal ideas in ways conducive to their respective civilizations and, as a result, have accrued a history of visual representation.  I use these concepts and their evolution as the lens to examine our collective experience throughout time and place, nature and science, body and mind.

Drawing is a means to gather and stitch together imagery from various sources.  Conceptually, drawing allows for imagery from different historical periods and locations to exist in the same pictorial space, an ideal format to capture evolving perspectives in global history, challenging established historical record by providing tantalizing alternatives to established fact.

I want to create elusive and intriguing images that entice the viewer to experience collisions between historical fact, wild conjecture, subconscious understanding, and mythology.
