Artist Statement

THE PROCESS OF MAKING A DRAWING OR PAINTING

I usually pull from a series of interactive lines made in a sketch pad, images from the subconscious that reflect mostly personal experiences.  If a painting from a brush and ink drawing of this series were to evolve, then the play of color not only helps to construct the work plasticly but becomes a psychological tool that determines both emotion and a measure of contradiction within the images on that particuar picture plane.  These color contradictions help to strengthen the ideas mainfested in the work.  These ideas are simply played out by using thought patterns that oppose each other.  But this is certainly not new.  One can see this happening in some of the best Chinese and Japnese paintings of early centuries.  It's called yin and yang.

Artist Bio / CV

Born in St. Louis, Missouri.

At an early age I studied under Val Vogel, a distinguished portrait painter.  Under her guidance, I was given a solo show at a center in St. Louis.

Attended Washington University Art School when Max Beckmann was artist in residence.  An undergraduate scholarship was offered to me in my second year.

Upon leaving St. Louis, I took printmaking courses at the Manhattan Graphics Center, New York.

I had a series of solo shows at Noho Gallery in New York beginning in 1993 along with a solo show of paintings at Heidi Jones Gallery, New York and a show of drawings at an alternative space in New York in 2000.  Other solo shows played out in New Jersey.

My work was included in many group shows in New York and New  Jersey.  One was curated by Betty Parsons at a gallery located in Princeton, NJ.  Other works were included in three annuals at the Trenton Museum.  Other group shows included the Omaha Museum, St. Louis Museum and the Millhouse-Bundy Arts Center, Waitsfield, Vermont.

Consignments included the Gladstone Gallery and the Susan Caldwell Gallery of New York.

I received the National Endowment For The Arts Fellowship Grant in 1985.  The same year I was the recipient of a fellowship grant from the New Jersey Council On The Arts.

Work is included in many collections both here and in Germany.

Reviews of my work were published in Art News Magazine and Arts Magazine of New York.
