Artist Statement

I sculpt with the properties that found materials already possess—their magnetism, weight, reactivity, reflectivity, and capacity to dissolve and mutate. I frame forces that govern through the everyday and the particular. What intrigues me is the millions of dollars the United States spends on mitigating, controlling, and containing corrosion of our infrastructure for the security of our country; I take this reality—impermanence—and make it the central focus of my work.

Whether mounted on the wall or extended throughout a room, the works draw focus to the properties that frame emotion.  Contained and delimited, the sculptures present a slice of an idea that by extension can be imagined in differing scale, like a carpet sample or fabric swatch.  Encompassing and continuous, the installations suggest eternity, limitlessness, and totality.

The works implicate their viewers.  Some materials, shiny or metallic, reflect what surrounds. Some convey a feeling of contiguity, texture, opticality, and weight. The magnetic force of attraction/repulsion allegorizes human relationships; these properties that form the foundation of the work enact their properties with the viewers.

Some engage the viewer by evoking the human desire to touch them; it is this vulnerability to touch that in fact most threatens the works’ permanence.
