Artist Statement

My practice is informed by folk art, anthropomorphic fables, animism, early American craft traditions and the natural world. For the last several years, I’ve worked on collages that borrow methodology from textile processes and quilt making. In making these works, the paper is handled as if it were fabric, using needles and often joining multiple panels of paper together to make large-scale paper quilts. The labor-intensive and hand-driven process is tactile, meditative and intimate.

Many of my early collages make a connection to narrative textile traditions that have a lineage of carrying encoded messages and telling symbolic stories, invoking a sense of blurring between the earthly and spiritual, as occurs with fairy tales or myths.  When representing clouds, storm patterns, insects, constellations, birds, flora and fantastic animals of all kinds, this act has the sensation of conjuring the forces that animate the waking and dreamed world.

Recently, I’ve been exploring abstract drawings, sculptures and installations based on rare and iconic American quilt patterns from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Some of this new work approaches the subject of the quilt as if it were rooted in the realm of architecture, incorporating light, shadow, reflection, movement and site-specificity. Drawing from a shared visual vocabulary that evolved out of a distinctly democratic folk art phenomenon, this emergent body of work alludes to the labor and love of handcraft while making historical connections across time and between disciplines of artistic practice.

When pairing down to hone in on abstract patterns and forms, I’m still interested in revealing a kind of dynamic organization that involves rhythm and repetition and a sense of aliveness that’s prevalent in the images with more organic imagery. In these new pieces, the effect of eye catching and mesmerizing pattern and color relationships are central to the compositions.
