Artist Statement

My practice is informed by American craft and folk art traditions, linking historical and contemporary practices. Early works on paper were related to anthropomorphic fables and the natural world, making connections to narrative textile traditions that have a lineage of carrying encoded messages and telling symbolic stories.

When making collages, the paper is handled in a similar way to fabric, using needles and often joining multiple panels of paper together to make large-scale paper quilts. This labor-intensive and hand-driven process is tactile, meditative and intimate.

Recently, I’ve been engaged in interdisciplinary experiments related to American quilt making, some of which explore the subject of the quilt as if rooted in the realm of architecture, with pieces that incorporate light, shadow, movement and site specificity. Part of the aim of this new work is to raise the symbolic iconography of American craft to a monumental level --to make visually mesmerizing and delightful pieces that also address interrelationships between art, labor, craft and traditions of handwork that came before me. Through the development of this new series, I’m interested in articulating a visual language that was freely shared amongst everyday people for centuries –creating a kind of egalitarian medium that embodies democratic ideals.
