Artist Statement

My practice is informed by American craft and folk art traditions, linking historical and contemporary practices. Recently I’ve been engaged in interdisciplinary experiments related to the history of the quilt, with a new series of drawings, paper collages, sculpture, text pieces and installations based on the iconography of early block patterns from the 18th and 19th centuries. This latest work is deeply connected to craft but it is also directly related to minimalism, geometric abstraction, op art and feminist practice. Some of the new pieces in this series explore the subject of the quilt as if rooted in the realm of architecture, with elements that incorporate light, shadow, movement and site-specificity. I’m fascinated by the ways in which quilt making evolved into a folk art phenomenon that depended upon freely sharing an egalitarian or democratic language of collective imagery, at the same time offering a platform to hone individual expressiveness. In responding to the phenomenon of the quilt, I’m drawn to inhabit a shape shifting or code switching that links the vernacular with the contemporary, the high and the low, and historically gendered divides. The resulting work is meant to be visually mesmerizing while at the same time upending aesthetic hierarchies and generating associations across time.
