Artist Statement

A Line, the simplest and most complicated marks, the earliest marks made by humans in a cave.

Exploring sound and the process of listening how and what we hear, Dianne Bowen delves into the depths of audible and inaudible conversations and information bouncing faster than the speed of light. Bowen’s work is thoughtful, thorough investigations referencing time, internal and external space with a poetic eye. Through various mediums and techniques formally her work addresses pushing the boundaries of Drawing as a medium and “the line”. Conceptually, Bowen’s work addresses the dichotomy between white noise, silence within nature and the loud constant banter of urban living in age with little or no barrier. There is no on/off button.

Communication and misscommunication, natural and man-made systems are explored. Based on initial translations of ambient sounds into forms of language she creates poetic spaces of both silent or playful tho mischievious banter. Incorporting her writing into the initial process as an extension of mark making Bowen creates what she terms, "note and code poems".  Using these translations, Bowen excavates information from depths of nothing and everything responding to the world. Imagery, materials or drawn lines operate as both micro and macro references to topographic and internal and external spaces. Individual or in varied patterns they mimic natural found routes instilling the presence of life overlooked quietly in progress through philosophic and scientific reflections. They are systems of flow like water or tree rings documenting and inaudible history.

In the recent installation work, the viewer wanders through highly detailed layered spaces seemingly invisible at first glance. The lines in wires and cut spirals seem to spring up and out of the surface and space attempting to escape or creep insidiously from their surface. Mylar cut outs document the movement in the room as a seed migrating. Subtle and quiet as a whisper.

I wanted to give you something like a note in a drawer a memory to keep with you for when you need it a whisper in your ear, I’m listening.
