Artist Statement

My practice is an ongoing investigation into the philosophical and psychological properties of social constructions pertaining to identity formation, (re)presentation, and personal narrative.

I’m interested in dissecting the ‘personal lens’ and studying how it functions. I work in distinct projects, each exploring various facets of these ideas.

I’m invested in drawing - its physicality and inherently intimate way of expression.  I use primarily graphite, colour pencils, and oils to create images that display depth and accurate representation, while retaining a raw mark quality.  The rawness or drawn/painted-ness is an essential part of my picture making. It allows the image to express with a straightforward faith in itself. The process is integral; the responsibility held in each mark on the surface, the investment of time, and the contemplative state during making. More recently, I’ve added sculptural works into my practice, still emphasizing the value of labour and time in making them.

My investment in personal narrative led me to my current examination of consciousness and perception.  I’m interested in demonstrating processes of perception, intersubjectivity, and in probing notions of ‘reality’.  Taking cues from philosophers Maurice Merleau-Ponty and Edmund Husserl, I aim to gesture to the nature of perception and ‘reality’, offering no substantial answer or end point; but simply providing a visual exploration of our (human) encounters with the world and how we find meaning in and of it.
