Artist Statement
On my first day in London I almost skipped a visit to the British Museum since my interest in art has generally been 19th century to the present day. When I started moving through the museum, I suddenly began to understand the colonial “collecting” impulse. For me, the objects in the collection held a beauty intrinsic to the things themselves—outside of use or historical value. During visits to London, Paris and New York, I documented objects whose forms resonated with me. While I took a large number of photographs, drawing these objects from life in my sketchbook afforded a sort of communion with them.
These mixed media drawings vary widely in scale and are based largely on photos and sketches of various “antiquities” collected from the British museum, the Louvre, Musee National des Arts et Métiers and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The drawings have a strong narrative component. The absurdist narratives that I constructed contain both idiosyncratic humor and expressive mark making. They are concerned with the human condition, express internal experience through fantastic imagery and touch on the tragi-comic qualities of life. Aesthetically, they reflect a concern with mark making and the physical qualities of materials.
