Artist Statement

Growing up in a small valley town, I spent my days in the woods among trees, fern, lakes and rivers. I have a deep relationship between natural form and human design and my propensity to include architecture within the landscape is a Thoreauvian attempt to coexist with nature. I built tree-forts from salvaged windows and doors of old Victorian houses that were being stripped down for remodeling. A treetop offered a birds-eye view, a place of safety and a swaying observation like a boat in the sky.  Another home that was being compromised was the very landscape below my tree fort.  NE Pennsylvania was slowly strip-mined to a fine black silt, turning your socks black in the rain. Though this did turn up fossils, I was perplexed by the acres of wildlife rendered to a vapid black desert. What finally sprouted through the dark ground was a maze of thorny brush and birch trees that riddled your clothes with green aphids. It was an entropic landscape of devastated metaphors, the very dilemma of our current existence. My currant imagery is intended to be a conscious search for a dialogue between ecstasy and dreadfulness; drawn by our desires but standing witness to the world’s suffering, consciously or unconsciously, in an apprehensive contradiction. I want the viewer to never forget the communal wild, that which we share with nature. Formally my landscapes/waterscapes embody many passages of time. I fuse separate layers to let light to pass through, implying planes of flux where then the more rendered areas fuse a temporary suspension from the movement. They are experienced as if they were growing into existence like the waves of the sea or the seasons of a forest. An overwhelming sense of movement and a deep feeling of continuous space are discovered through these layers. What we are confronted with is human complexity and contradiction while subtly aiming at global environmental issues. Our wild natural world inherently remains feral inside us all.
