Artist Statement

My work is the result of constant visual research in places that teeter between vitality and vacancy. I build macro and microscopic city/landscapes on paper using mixed media-- screen print, lithography, drawing, paint and intaglio. Reflective materials, such as metal leaf and spray paint, form subtle transitons that mirror my movements-- e.g. the pace of walking past city blocks or sun glare as seen from a car window.

Using my own composited photography as a journalistic survey of properties and land, I parse developemnt patterns, population loss and land-use policies in direct response to the visual language extant in my surroundings-- color, monuments, architecture, reflectivity and pattern.

The photos are meditiations taken during my daily transit in Cleveland, OH, however two recent residencies (in Dresden and Tijuana) have significantly broadened my color palette, and introduced an expanded range of elements. Both of those locations forced me to confront their histories and embedded issues related to their growth.

In Cleveland, a city whose gilded age of unchecked wealth and enormous growth has ended in abandonment, we deal with sprawl despite a declining population.
