Artist Statement

I am a sneaky feminist. I use humor, as well as familiar visual formats, such as historical illustration, to lure the viewer into the work. Installations of my current theme, entitled "The Museum of Historical Makeovers," are presented in the context of a futuristic beauty history museum set in the early 4th millennium. The museum framework allows for a free hand in commentary on today’s values in a familiar format that is inviting rather than confrontational. All works are presented as if created by fictitious artists with museum-style labels that include authoritative language. A performance aspect as fake curator has developed from the museum work.

The “Museum of Historical Makeovers” series currently includes work with the following themes 1.) the rise and fall of the Princess Fashion Era, 2.) forest landscapes created by an artist who supposedly used mascara liquid as an art medium, 3.) hair removal and bleaching procedure etchings in the style of Eakins and Rembrandt , 4) faux French illustrations of lower back tattooing and other processes, 5.) artifacts from the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Gwen Stefani – ruler of the pop empire from 2009-2061 AD, and 6.) the ill-fated attempt to create a Hello Kitty Mount Rushmore.
