Sercan’s critical interests and visual practice focus on Language, Identity, and Politics. He is interested in observing the interaction of these three elements and their influence on the formation of individual realities/memories. Visually Sercan chooses very different strategies to investigate and execute the work; it involves a fluid interaction of abstraction and figuration in a mostly two-dimensional format by using painting and drawing as his preliminary visual strategies. Text began to occupy significant space in his recent work as he began to deal with the concepts of language and identity more and more.
The sources that motivate his work vary; images and stories found in newspapers, magazines, comics, graphic novels, books, the Internet, films, his own photography and sketches, present him with the impetus to develop his work. While there is a strong sense of narrative behind his work, it is the ambiguity of the same narrative that makes the finished piece more compelling.
