Artist Statement

My paintings and drawings are self-portraits that represent the plurality and multiplicity of my identity by using images of estheisized food and complex patterns. The patterns are derived from actual historical fabrics used in women’s fashion and domestic interiors.  They are symbolic of the roles woman have had in various cultures. The patterns from both eastern and western cultures are the environment that enhances and suffocates the food.  The food is the body and the surrogate for the desire to consume and control women.

Densely packed and precisely hand painted patterns create and violate the space where the still-life is presented. A complicated interweaving of foreground and background generates confounded spatial ebb and flow.  Patterns, icons, and still-life were painted in many different styles to accentuate spatial tension. The rhythm of the patterns are echoed in the composition of the still-life and the marbling of the hung raw beef rendered in color pencil.  My painting’s surface is varied to creat the maximum complexity and to enhance the sensuality of the paint.  In contrast, the divergence of styles imbues the image with collage-like dissonance.  While the depiction of the food strongly references the Dutch still-life tradition, collaging and breaking of the picture planes and architectural planes acknowledge the practice of the painting in the post-modern era.  At the same time, through a labor-intensive process, I cast a critical eye on the mechanical reproduction and proliferation of imagery in our daily lives.
