Artist Statement

My recent drawings feature graphic translations of motion picture sequences that form the basis for abstract compositions.

Transcribed from DVD in the form of notes, charts, or film still sketches, I archive information in sketchbooks and notebooks. I study selected details within the source production, such as character movement, editing patterns, image sequencing, characters present in each shot, set design, camera motion, and color combinations evident within the frame. From these examinations, I create numerous self-invented graphic vocabularies expressed as lines, notations, elements and other forms.

As an artist, I am fascinated by the relationship between systemic procedures derived from popular media content and how they relate to intuitive processes inherent in the physical act of drawing and markmaking. I have a strong interest in how media-based material can be reinterpreted as graphic sequences that can be recombined, repeated and reconstructed in order to generate fictionalized interpretations of new, imagined productions.
