Artist Statement
Most of my recent work relates to language and/or systems of organizing information. I am an inveterate collector and I enjoy systematizing what is culturally invisible, taken for granted, assumed to be of no value, etc. A frequent source is recorded popular music, of which i have a large collection in several formats. The first 5 collages reflect this interest and employ what, in the LP era, were known as 'mini's' - reduced images of album covers used for promotion. Another inspiration has been junk mail: for example, Untitled (still life) uses printed patterns lining security envelopes and Untitled (sky bar codes) uses business reply envelopes.

The balance of the pieces employ shellac-based inks keyed to the Pantone color matching system and all focus on some aspect of language. Here, again, my interest in music comes in with song lyrics and phrases that pay homage to certain artists. For example, For Hawkshaw Hawkins pays homage to the country singer who had a hit with LOnesome-77203. Other works may exploit cliches or idiomatic expressions. With the multipanel pieces, the individual elements are intended to be in separate frames; the distance between elements varies depending on the intent of the work.
