Artist Statement

 SYLVIA JEFFRIESS

Liminal spaces have an extensive history in global culture, east and west. Found in areas as variable as folklore and mythology, religion, architecture, spatial theory, constructs of time, and the relationship between humans and nature. These spaces are the articulation of the grey areas of understanding and existence between the solid known facets of the world, often imbued with a sense of cultural mystique, inhabiting a special place in the cultural sub-conscious where the impossible becomes possible. Our contemporary world is rapidly moving towards a future built upon complex networks of structures, imbued with a lack of definitive boundaries due to a myriad of factors such as extensive cultural diasporas, virtual realities and internet related culture. With fewer people prescribing to traditional structured religion, the liminal comes to represent a positive space in which to gain knowledge and insight from the very unknown in which we currently find ourselves constantly inhabiting. My practice creates liminal spaces incorporating painting, drawing and installation techniques, that are built upon the reinterpretation and regurgitation of a myriad of cultural symbols, language and imagery drawn from international sources in order to provide an environment in which the audience can build their own private narrative responding to the works, based upon what can be as opposed to what is.
