Artist Statement

Whether my drawings are abstract or figurative they all imply a narrative content.  With the more representational pieces I pursue an interest in the sometimes mysterious, often curious, aspects of human interactions and the natural world.  The abstract drawings contain a trace of human participation but don’t literally depict it.
I begin many of the images utilizing a technique similar to the “automatism” of the surrealists.  This involves allowing the pencil to move with no pre-conceived notion about what I will draw, then actively completing it.  Other drawings are the result of ideas triggered by evocative images which I’ve collected from various sources over the years.  I allow those to suggest the image and then begin to draw.  As a result of these approaches the representational works appear much like scenes isolated from a story or a dream while the abstract images lead to a more purely visual or emotional experience.
I especially like images which one can view and explore over time but never fully comprehend.  That is how I hope my work will be enjoyed.
