Notes on Animated Drawings

There, But Not There explores one of the fundamental aims of drawing: creating the illusion of three dimensional space on a flat plane. The latter is especially relevant to the sculptor, and intriguingly animation appears well placed to recreate the perambulatory and kinetic nature of experiencing sculpture by manipulating the observer’s viewpoint by proxy. It therefore unites the second and fourth dimensions to imply the third.

This work also references the act of drawing by effectively documenting its own creation. The continuous mapping of form through moving pencil lines is a surrogate drawing in space; a sculptural sketch of what might be, there, but not there.

Doodle is explicitly two dimensional, and shares much in common with more traditional drawing materials. It achieves lifelike depictions of media including pencil, rubber, charcoal, pen and ink and the potential subtlety of marks such as smudges, overdrawing, traces, and bleeds.

La Linea nella sabbia is meditation on drawing for the sake of drawing.

 General Notes

My practice seems increasingly driven by the accommodation of perceived paradoxes including: the singular form with both unity and variation, the invisible object, and explicit perceptual ambiguities. This has resulted in a shift from weight, mass, and opacity to space, light, transparency, and translucency.

Light and the ability of translucent and transparent form to capture it have become crucial: with edge and membrane equally significant for the definition of geometry and the creation of illusion and ambiguity. Recent sculptures respond to light in unexpected ways; the inflatables project ephemeral shadows and reflections, whereas the resin forms appear to glow mysteriously from within, sometimes casting luminously colourful hues over their surroundings. Form as a vehicle for light and colour. Sculpture that draws.
