Artist Statement

I have been working with digital and interactive media since the mid 90’s. Conceptually, I am interested in how we negotiate, identify and interpret transitions between real and virtual space, through our ever-increasing use of technology as a means of communication and interaction. My work frequently addresses, explores and exploits the limitations and parameters set by programmers and developers of software and hardware, often working at the periphery of intended uses, teasing and tugging at the edges to explore the implication of the imposed boundaries.

Over the past five years my work has explored digital portraiture, interactivity, 3D and animation. This has been part of an ongoing body of work continuing the long tradition of artists’ representation, in particular self-representation in art history, expanding upon this genre within the context of 21st century technology and techniques.

Most recently I have created Madame I, a short 3D animation for mobile phones inspired by neurological research in the early 20th century into the loss of proprioception, or body awareness. The work transposes this condition onto a 3D animated character existing on a mobile phone, Madame I, of the work’s title, who contemplates the nature of her disembodied predicament. The work is available to download to your phone/computer at http://www.madamei.com .
