Artist Statement
I study the fissure between signs and signification, and the malleability of meaning determined by applications of written and symbolic languages through mark, shape, and placement. Primarily, I consider how systems of encryption are used to bend or mask language to one set of viewers while communicating directly to other select groups, or the translation from one ideological system to another. This notion came to light while studying medieval illuminated manuscripts, as they frequently include idiosyncratic puns and shorthand. Acting as a device for representation, commentary, or a rare spark of individualism on the part of the scribe, meanings that were conveyed in images and symbols often took the place of the verbal, but later reappeared as stylized marks or words with ambiguous meanings. This is how new words, names and figures of speech are born, and similar transformations remain rampant today in our media-enhanced, multi-language, global communication systems.

In addition, I have an ongoing project called Airplane Drawings. These drawings represent my immediate response to visual patterns on the ground, as seen from an airplane. In order to document what I see as quickly as possible, I work with ballpoint pen directly onto the magazine that I am reading. These drawings serve as the basis for many of my painted compositions - a strange mix of typography and topography.
