Artist Statement

>As a person who was born in the desert next to an atomic power plant I have, as a child, experienced both technology and nature as strong forces to be reckoned with. On the one hand, there was the desert with its huge, seemingly empty space, full of life under the stones and small bushes. The sun blazing on the heads of people, the plants, bugs and other animals managing to survive those harsh conditions due to a long evolution. On the other hand, there was the secret atomic power plant. It was located in a hidden place, with its beautiful silver dome and enormous towers. It held inside its structure the ability to create massive energy. I was able to explore the desert and to get to know it, Yet I was unable to either explore or observe the atomic power plant, for one was not allowed to go near it.

>My background has inspired me as an artist to work with technology. I love building machines and seeing how they come to be ‘personalized’. In the last few years, I have created a body of work using both technology and the human body. I started on my robotic and mechanical sculptures with the desire to make the most personal and intimate machine. My interest lies in the transformation that the human body undergoes when it stops behaving like a human being and starts to function as a mechanical device which conceptually incorporates the flesh.

> Nowadays modern technology is there to help us with any aspect of our life, and we rely on it. But it is also there to control and tag us. In my own way, I am using it as a shamanistic tool to create sculptures that reawaken an emotional moment. I tried to evoke a ‘condition humaine’, of the individual within the family and the individual within the state. Loss of power, dominance, authority, fear, control and surrender these all seem to occur simultaneously in my work. To conclude, I am blending technology and nature to breathe life into lifeless being.
