Artist Statement

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live,” Joan Didion writes at the opening of her book, The White Album. I make work because of an impulse to create, and also from a compulsion to speak. By telling stories from my own life with humor and make believe, I’m creating a world that endeavors to offer a thoughtful discourse on the melancholy and levity in life.  I have created a troupe of villainous aquatic creatures, cartoonish and somber birds, who’s megaphone beaks and hunched shoulders refer to my own thunderous laugh and disguised introversion and who also possess traits that reflect our collective internal and external maladies.

My drawings are constructed with pastels and collage.  The pastels create a powdery atmosphere for the cut paper elements, which are built from the interiors of security envelopes, parts of books and other paper remnants I’ve collected.  As a bibliophile, I have a loving relationship with books, both as raconteurs and as objects.  By including actual parts of them in the drawings, I’m weaving pieces of their history into my stories.

One of the prominent influences in my work is the Japanese art of Ukiyo-e (literally, “pictures of the floating world”).  Ukiyo-e was used to describe a seedy underworld of gambling and geishas, I appreciate the term in a more literal translation and have used it to build a place for my narratives that actually floats above our real and actual experiences and reflects the evanescent nature of our stories.
