Artist Statement

The fundamental subject of my drawing practice is the tension between seeing and marking. This is the essence, or essential tension, found in the act of drawing, especially when drawing from life.

While drawing, I work to note, observe, and record the action of seeing. My goal is to explore the act of looking through the action of mark making. It is my priority to respond to an observed subject intuitively, without preconception of the event, and without any
predetermined idea of the resulting image. Instead, remaining in the moment, I notate the movement of the eye, whether it skips over a
subject, focuses on one point, or changes subject entirely. I register the marks as the eye looks, without concern for representation. I work to keep my hand in time with the eye, marking at the same pace as I see. If the eye wanders, skips, or changes perspective, the hand attempts to note that movement. In a sense, my drawing practice is about the observation of observation. I watch myself look, and the hand is the monitor of the event.

This practice has lead to a style of drawing that is often abstract,
intuitive, and intimate.  It is a practice that informs me of a world that is not, and can not be, understood in a systematic, rational, or pragmatic way. My drawing practice often feels like a scientific
pursuit, a practice based on trial and error, that inadvertently notes
the disparity between the the outer world and the inner being.
