Artist Statement

My work often deals with the contradictions within life. Not only in human life, but also the contraries that exist in nature.

As human beings we find it safe to think something is either good or bad, while in reality the two often go together.

In many situations an area exists where it is not clear if something is good or bad, scary or beautiful. I find this fascinating. In my drawings I try to touch the overlap, this no-man’s-land of contraries that exist at the same time. This duality makes the image confusing, because it attracts and rejects at the same time. There is a thin line between chaos and order, inside and outside, micro and macro, life and death.

With my work I want to confront and confuse the viewer. I want the work to appeal and disturb at the same time.

Something hairy can be sweet and soft, or is it bestial and scary?

Something looks bloody and organic, but when you come closer you see a beautiful refined structure.

I use human, bestial and natural elements to create an image.

I want to create structures that are new and strange but also look familiar.

In my drawings everything is connected. I play with cellular forms and natural structures. Every particle is part of a bigger whole where everything fits together.

I try to find a logic in the forms I use in my work and bring order and chaos together just as in nature.

I draw with very simple materials: pencil on paper. For me this is the most direct medium. The contrast between the large-sized paper and the details in the lines gives an exciting effect.

Drawing for me is to explore life and the secrets in it, and create a new but also familiar world.
