Artist Statement

Born July 6, 1980, graduated OCAD 2004, Katie Bond Pretti is a Toronto based artist  interested in manipulating narrative technique using lyrical and figurative abstraction. Within each composition, repetition of marks accumulate and the image approaches representation spontaneously (as in the nature of contour drawing or gestural abstraction). Optical mixing, intuitive and formal colour theory, and the cumulative elements and principles of design are means to describe the indescribable, like poetry uses words, syntax, rhyme, and rhythm to illustrate mood.

Pretti has independently held studios in Toronto, Brooklyn, and Buenos Aires. Her first publication, a book of drawings entitled Sonority of Words, was launched in Toronto by Art Metropole, featured at the 2007 NYC Art Book Fair, and subsequently added to the collection of The National Gallery of Canada. Pretti’s work has been showcased at the Toronto International Art Fair, auctioned at Ritchies and Heffel auctioneers, profiled in Carte Blanche Volume 2: Painting (a survey of Canadian Painters), Elle CanadaFashion Magazine, Canadian House and HomeInside Entertainment, and others.
