Artist Statement

These drawings are from a series I began about a month ago.  Their spareness and physicality reference my earlier work with paper, and mark a shift away from the pictorial evident in the architectural collages from 2006 to 2009. Across all the work, the idea persists that the same things that establish identity, safety, or presence are also risks or threats.  Vulnerability and strength seem to originate from the same source.

Working on both sides of the vellum, allowing the light coming through the paper to mask and reveal, and using thread to mark, penetrate, and hold move these drawings toward sculpture and installation.  I am refreshed to see that they suggest work to be done in real space.
