Artist Statement

VICTOR ROMÃO - Artist Statement

My years of living in a small town in rural Southwestern Ontario, Canada, have acted as the catalyst for my interest in researching the topics of fear, alterity, and male violence.   The various acts and levels of male violence that I witnessed while living in a rural community, as well as my investigations of the topics of rural patriarchy and male sexuality, have contributed to the comprehension of the inner works of my small home town and of the role I played within its social boundaries.  In turn, my personal experience and research have aided in my understanding of the structure and framework of many rural communities throughout North America.
Having been exposed to various events related to the fear of  “outsiders”, my desire is to illustrate my observations and continual examination of the aforementioned topics via the process of creating 2 and 3 dimensional works of art.  In doing so, I hope to provide the viewers of my work with an unsettling encounter that simulates my discomfort of being dually attracted to and repulsed by certain aspects of North American rural life.
