Artist Statement
Michael Bilsborough draws bacchanalian bashes and mysterious misadventures in which men and women couple, compete and retreat.

Initially thriving on libidinal laxity and appetitive abandon, these orgies soon crumble and we witness a mixed review of sex, reaching beyond sex as unconditional pleasure.

The drawings also examine the narrative potential of perspective and placement of figures. Focus on volume and space isolates psychological distance and time. Perspective produces a proscenium for the mise-en-scène and ushers the audience into a voyeuristic role; this is especially true for the site-specific, life-scale murals.

Perspective also enlists the drawings to a system of rules: the visual principles that govern the ways a figure, body part, or piece of furniture can generally appear.

The architectural spaces engage a language of geometric abstraction. The walls and props report well-behaved, Euclidean rectitude. Moreover, the geometric integrity results from laborious calculation and mathematical regulation, at odds with the sensual, sexual agitation of the orgies depicted.

Ultimately, the cerebral, calculated drawing style challenges the visceral, spontaneous nature of the behavior it depicts. It's the Cool looking at the Hot, the Clean looking at the Dirty.
