Artist Statement

Through my work I envision moments of experimentation and discovery. My current egg tempera paintings embody the quest for narrative alternatives. The history of science and optics inform my recent work.

What often interests me most about science is the story behind the research and discovery. Behind every theory and conclusion there is a human story, sometimes mundane, sometimes extraordinary.

Discovering, analyzing and understanding phenomena are practices that artists and scientists share, but differ in approach. The profoundly strange and wonderful ideas offered by quantum physics, alchemy and science-fiction find a visual adaptation in my work. Pseudo-sciences and super-natural investigations are also very intriguing as wellsprings for narrative potential.

Through a combination of visual and narrative experiments, I explore the nature of reality, history, gender and personal experience and hope to create images that are at once captivating and anomalous.
Pseudo-science, the appearance of artificial scientific processes, and folklore are often source material. Literature and language are also inspirations in my work. I am particularly drawn to words whose meaning may shift based on the context in which they are used. I often work with argot related to geology, natural history and landscape that differ from the literal or linguistic meanings. I experiment with how text and titles may change an image, how they can feed each other while not describing a fixed meaning. Some of the combinations are reckless where others are more direct and illustrative.

These interests have led me to generate tableaus in which the protagonist may transform into the antagonist and text may elucidate or confuse, yielding uncanny scenarios and relationships between characters, objects and language. Analogies for anxiety, paranoia and trepidation, these combinations look to contribute to and challenge the already rich and long-lived traditions of pictorial story telling. I am involved in creating a complex visual experience rooted in inventing and posing questions rather than eliciting answers.
