Artist Statement

Flip books have always interested me but I was disappointed by  the fact that I could not see the "movie" in it's entirety, I could only see a page at a time. I started cutting away those parts that made various shapes move within the body of the book thus allowing the "movie" to be seen once the cover was opened.

Soon, the content, the "movie" could not be contained within the covers of the book. They expanded out in points and panels, outlines and squares, flopping and laying about on the tabletop. There was still movement, the "movie" was still rolling but now it was no longer as important, the overall shape, the flop, the flex was more important.

The books themselves are no longer books per se. They are still paper and fabric bound together in a traditional book binding manner but they have no content or imagery, frequently aren't able to be opened at all and are only building blocks of larger works. They are testing the limits of the paper/fabric assembly, curving through, flying over, bending around, expanding out of and bridging the shapes they are cut into.
