Artist Statement

A bit… queer, looking in or around from outside. The pain of not being allowed in with the gift of the else-wise perspective.

For years I have been interested in expanding the reach of figurative drawing and painting, of what it can be and say via marks and rendering and subject, of where it can be via physical placement in the world, of intermingling and insinuating hand wrought marks and figures into the world off-kilter.

The images in this series range from "media drawings" that are taped to the TV and photographed at key moments, to paper installations, to drawings inserted into landscapes, as well as "traditional" works on paper, where I experiment with subtlety of rendering, distortion, blurring, and unexpected mark-making to tease at the complexity of my subject matter.

I examine  the Other, the un-voiced, specifically through queer and animal imagery—usually combined with flavors of the uncanny (uncomfortably strange yet familiar) and the haunted, where haunting represents socio-cultural figures or forms wronged and left in an unresolved or dissolute state

There are always the questions, posed through these hyper fantastical hybridities of rendering, titling, and placement: “What IF?” and “How can things that seem normal and fixed actually be contingent and otherwise?”
