I don’t identify with a particular medium: drawing, painting, video, performance are all part of what I do. I mine sources, contemporary and historical, personal and public, searching for materials to repurpose and reconfigure. I mix and assemble, and make a new thing. Sometimes I take the new thing, mash it up and make it again. It’s the same old story: destruction as a form of creation, creation as a form of destruction.
The source material for the "Continuous Wave” series is personal. I take old love letters, long abandoned, and key blocks of their text into Morse code translators I find on the Web. I then carefully draw the dot dash sequences onto fresh sheets of paper, repeating the same letter multiple times and rewriting the language as abstract pattern. When the paper surface is nearly obliterated, I add paint and coffee to modify and seal sections of the drawing. By foregrounding repetition and patterning my process drains personal meaning from the original letters: the sentiment is buried in the ‘ground’ of the paper and the words become a series of barely legible marks.
