Artist Statement
On the work of Morten Schelde

…”Morten Schelde's drawings combine reality with fantasy, man with nature, and drift in and out of focus . By subtly combining these oppo-sites, he creates a new type of imagery. His drawings are often compared to films made by American director David Lynch. Schelde's methods show parallels to Lynch's cinematic work; the meticulously filmed movies reveal subliminal horror scenarios'. Schelde, how-ever, consciously chooses to use the drawing medium with its protracted process of emer-gence, allowing him to approach his subject matter and themes with deliberation and slowly give them shape. It is a way of preserving the autonomy of expression inherent in the single image. The process of drawing allows for a gradual shaping of emotive processes. Also, the color or graphite pencils used on the text-ural surface of the paper create a sensual aes-thetic that inspires thought and feeling. (…)”

From Jeannette Stoscheck’s text ”Interior and Exterior Space” on my work in the catalogue ”Treasure Island, dear Tiger!” from the exhibition of the same title, Museum der Bildenen Künste, Leipzig 2006.

I am questioning the role of the artist in a more and more knowledge-based modern world, my own role as an artist, and the objectivity of the scientists.

I am interested in the boundaries between the personal memory and an objective approach to phenomena in the world – in this case, the idea of “the scientific” opposed to the private memories and emotions.

Morten Schelde, Copenhagen, july 2007.
