Artist Statement
My drawings show animals doing various activities, typically watching, hunting, sleeping or nesting. These are the most fundamental of behaviors of any animal, and represent the basic elements of species survival. The stark blackness of graphite on white paper, which is often left partially blank, isolates the subjects and makes them seem alone, even when in a pair. Detailed pencilling lends delicacy to the drawings, and the texture of fur, scales, and feathers makes the creatures tangible, as if you could reach out and touch the wild things. My renderings illustrate a harsh but elegant existence in the animal kingdom.

I paint on velvet because of its soft, luminous surface, and use dyes to achieve both saturated and subtle coloration. My dyed images of landscapes and flowers have a loose, watery style, in contrast to the realism of my pencil drawings. With their rustically applied color, the paintings portray the melting, runny season of spring when blooms burst forth through the cover of old snow.
