Artist Statement

This body of artwork takes its inspiration from the research done by Peter and Rosemary Grant on Darwins Finches in the Galapagos. The Grant family studied Darwins Finches for the last 30 years and they have shown the finches to be an accelerated example of natural selection and a documentable illustration of the origin of a species. This research became a basis for my body of artwork titled CONDITIONS KNOT WITH STANDING.  Taken as an exploration of the limitations of free will, the work presents a poetics of Darwins finches, showing the ties that bind the birds to be more powerful than being-in-itself. The artworks quest is to explore the entire spectrum of means employed by humans to define themselves: decoration, status, relationships, symbology, language and scientific reasoning

Why are we here, why do we act and look the way we do?  In Conditions Knot with Standing, birds tethered to one another by their tails create mandalas gone awry. Lines form knots, traps and spheres - tangling the birds into beautiful structures that attract and ensnare. We are tied to our bodies, our cultures, and our earth. The continuation of our species with its customs and habits, both biological and cultural, that makes us feel so reassured is also our downfall. Just as with other species, humans are a product of the need for this continuance and the decisions we think we conjure on our own are derived from this evolutionary muddle, albeit a very complex muddle.

My approach to materials, decoration and color is eccentrically formal, verging on funk, and insistently low tech. The craft of how it is made has become a language that is an integral part of the content of the work. The sculptures, ranging from intimate wall pieces to a large-scale mixed media installation, are fabricated from plaster and steel, selectively covered with tautly stretched swimsuit fabric and stockings. Wryly referencing the natural markings of animals, the birds plumage evokes notions of status, hierarchy and social ritual.
