Artist Statement

This current series of work aims to capture that feeling you have upon waking up from a just forgotten dream.  Bits and components of the dream are there, but the whole picture never fully comes back to you.
I try to address all of that formally by blending easily recognizable representational forms with abstracted elements.  Oftentimes I make use of the landscape in my paintings, employing fractal forms in objects like mountains to create structure out of chaotic elements.  Time and place are not important because both of those things are relative to a set experience.
This latest body of work is all self referential.  Pieces of smaller paintings show up within the larger paintings, acting almost like a Matryoshka doll.  Smaller paintings focus more inward, using motifs like eclipses to show the hidden world.  As the paintings get larger they get much more complex, addressing and combining the ideas in the smaller paintings.
The end result are paintings that feel fantastical while at the same time seeming familiar.

Artist Bio / CV
I am an artist originally from Omaha, Nebraska and now working in San Francisco, California.  Over the last five years I have shown my work extensively around the country, especially in the Bay Area, Los Angeles region and the midwest.  Specifically, my work has been seen at Thinkspace, Tinlark, Michael Rosenthal, Circuit 12, The Bemis Underground, among others.  My paintings have appeared in numerous publications and has also recently been featured on numerous bands albums.
Also, I used to play bass in a punk band and toured all over the country.  We may have met at some point.
