Artist Statement
I am using the language of painting to communicate ideas about language itself. In doing this, I am also exploring themes of expansion and contraction, looking and the desire for perfect forms, and cosmological and phenomenological forces. In creating meaning between disparate abstract forms, I cull from a visual vocabulary rooted in the imaginary, the real and the symbolic. Most often my visual cues come from the body and the landscape. My recent works draw from a wide range of influences; I am intrigued by the binarism inherent in the poetry of Pablo Neruda, recent scientific advancements into outer space, and the tenets of Minimalist painting.

To be specific, I am creating a cast of formal characters that exist in relation to one another, in simple or complex narratives, and that also have fixed meaning based on my personal associations with their form. By identifying and labeling the distinct forms that are most archetypal and stable for me to work with, I am taking the manner of preference and reduction to create my own language of formal elements. It is clear to me that unconscious negotiations with experiences of the real (that which is so ineffable) over many years is responsible for these forms, their recurrence in my work, and their stability within my speech and visual language. In my efforts towards stabilization of meaning, I have taken on painting as a sort of metaphysical, spiritual practice, a way of making sense and reaching towards enlightenment.
