Artist Statement

These drawings are based on an esoteric, eccentric system I created that combines the grid, Hiragana, and my obsessions with color and with metro transit systems: trams and subway trains. They are the largest drawings I’ve made on paper. Each drawing charts a phonetically transliterated subway system including those of: Berlin, Tokyo, Seoul, New York, San Francisco, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Although the drawings appear densely chaotic they are actually systematic. When mistakes are made I correct the error in gold, following the Japanese tradition of mending broken ceramics with melted gold: highlighting an error or unplanned gesture and creating beauty from accident.

Working in this way creates the opportunity for developing something I cannot completely predict or control.
