Artist Statement

The driving force behind my work is a fascination in the transformation of meaning through representation and the reinvention of context. This focus manifests itself in artworks that explore material and identity transformation and the atavistic tension between natural and artificial forms of beauty.

The Frottage Of Me works are a series of self-portraits on muslin. Draping sheer muslin directly over my face, I proceed to make one and two-toned conté crayon rubbings of myself. Despite their origins—a direct transfer from my own body—each performative drawing reveals a different identity. I thus lose myself in the process of rendering my own image

In Blow, 2007 the words of the 2003 State Of the Union Address, delivered by President Bush, are cut out from numerous, large (40 x 60”) sheets of paper and piled on a glass topped pedestal to resemble cocaine. In the works UNDERBUSH, 2005 and 2006, hanging paper garlands festoon from the ceiling. However, meaning is morphed by repainting over the normally flashy foil colors with the matte colors founds in camouflage. Drab greens, deep browns and black refigure the familiar context of celebration, subverting the role of decoration, creating in its place an oppressive canopy of deception. The watercolors, for example, THE WHITE ROOM: NUMBER 10 DOWNING STREET, are paintings of UNDERBUSH as though installed within the different rooms of the British Prime Minister’s residence, Number 10 Downing Street. The NAKED SWAN, and other bird drawings, are part of a larger body of sculptural work titled, THE CHRONICLES OF NARCISSISM. (In The Chronicles of Narcissism, mirrored surfaces are integrated into installations and sculptural objects – plucked swans, furniture, clothing, and globes – to address the contradictions implicit in narcissism.). The drawings are illustrations of the plucked birds, naked but for their head feathers.
