Artist Statement

I see drawing as a form of active language consisting of small thoughts, collisions and complements that explore and explain how we interact with the world. The activity of drawing is a form of data analysis – using what I know about negotiating different spaces, spaces for movement and spaces for thinking, to understand and explore what else is possible. Data in the form of information fragments are reinterpreted through marks and gestures that create symbol systems within the specific site of the paper. The reinterpretations are informed by dynamic sets of relations that develop as I reposition myself according to the marks and gestures.

Tracey Bowen has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Canada. She received her PhD from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto in 2004. Her dissertation, titled Translations and Refractions: An Exploration of Making Art by Hand and Computer, investigates the ways in which traditional visual artists work within the cyborg realm combining both manually and digitally based procedures for creating art. She has written on various topics in visual art education, visual culture and studio pedagogy. Her current research looks at drawing as data analysis. This new investigation is the focus of an upcoming article titled “Drawing within the Chiasm” for the online journal Tracey: Contemporary Drawing Research, through the University of Loughborough. Bowen teaches in the Communication, Culture and Information Technology program at the University of Toronto.
