Artist Statement

Everything beyond the self is a landscape. I experience a city with my body and through my senses. In a Baltimore neighborhood, one may see condemned row houses neighboring a thriving gallery situated inside a noxious auto-body shop beside a clamoring highway along which knolls of grass blush with weeds.  Baltimore is a modern, non-sensical habitat. Yet, to survive in the everyday, I must reckon with this landscape as logical. If Baltimore is not absurd, then I can learn to accept most oddities part of the natural wonder of life.

In my landscapes, I include as much as I can in one picture plane, and then allow the objects to mingle. These moments are consumed in emotion and suffering, yet hopelessly connected to other moments, possibly joyous or humorous. If I followed the contours of objects in contact (for example, where my feet meet the floor as I write this, where those floorboards meet the earth, and where the earth meets the ocean…), I could wrap a line around the entire world. Actually, that line would be more of a net, encasing all the earth. There is interconnectivity within a landscape. This connection is not the disparate spray of technological information, imported from across the globe, but the rendering of the subtle influences others have on our lives. Wherever I live, it makes sense to move slowly and look at what I touch, because it will connect me to things beyond even perception.
