Artist Statement

In the past few years I have become fascinated by the complicated relationship between the hand-drawn and the reproduced artifact.

Some of these pieces started out as drawings from life, became backgrounds for popular television and I made them into prints (Out West).  I have been experimenting with these images in pairs as lightboxes or prints. A grid of 16 of them is my favorite arrangement so far (but it's very hard to represent that properly in one image, I prefer not to try). I include 4 of the images here.

Hurricane started as information gathered from the environment (a real storm), which was computerized into a visual translation (a radar image).Which I then re-translated into 1s and 0s before burning it to a screen and printing with chalk onto the black board. A series of storms in motion is just beginning.

You+I started similarly as an on-line animation about swell heights in the Atlantic Ocean based on information sent back from water bound data gathering stations.  I drew the animation frame by frame in my computer animation program and now this data loops on the screens of the phones and commemorates a specific week of my life.

New Mathsymbols began as a drawing collaboration with two year old Luise Menge, whose spirited drawing helped me re-design some standard usage mathsymbols. Together we drew on ten blank postcards which I mailed from berlin to New York.  These prints here are high quality scans of those postcards with traces of their travel through the mail system. I include 4 of the 10 prints here.

With Confrontation2- Made in China I took a jpeg from MOMA's website of Gerhard Richter's cycle October 18th, 1977.  I added a picture I took of a symbol stencilled in paint (which I made by hand on paper) in Photoshop over the image.  Then I emailed this picture to a factory in China which specializes in making paintings from photographs, and commissioned them to paint my photo to the original dimensions of the Richter painting.  I would like to treat Richter's entire cycle of 15 paintings with the help of 15 different painters. Jugenbildnis- Made by Georgi and Tote2 -Made by Jochen Plogstiess are in the process of being painted.
