Artist Statement

The Identity series is a progression of my work as a culture jammer in NYC. When I came to Barcelona eight years  ago I became intrigued with exposed city walls and their special beauty. I found these walls to be the perfect background surface for the faces that I wanted to create as an alternative to the ones we are used to seeing in the cityscape. Instead of a model selling you a product or a politician selling you their caring glance, my icons give importance back to the population. I believe that our identity should come from within and not from the brands that we wear. We should question what forces choose our cultural icons, our role models, our values and aesthetics. The charcoal medium, in this case is chosen specifically as a metaphor for the ephemerality and fragility of our identities. After days of labor the charcoal fades with the weather, slowly returning the site to its original state. These works are performance pieces steeped in reflection.

The URBAN ANALOGIES series allows me to blend peoples faces with the textures of their cities by incorporating restoration transfer methods and the transparent quality of charcoal to echo the harsh beauty and heartfelt visual poetry of the IDENTITY SERIES in a gallery format.

The EXPECTATION PROJECT is an example of the types of projects that I undertake that allow me to explore and push the limits of contemporary portraiture.
