Artist Statement

The other day my coworker, Michael, walked by eating a donut and said, “I will cry about this later.” I suddenly realized that this moment needed to be documented. So I quickly made a drawing of the box of donuts and his statement. The majority of my drawings are inspired by these kinds of daily events. Other times, I purposefully sit down to make a drawing, searching the room or surfing the Internet or watching television for an idea. This feels more like meditation than an epiphany.

Articulation, in any form, has never been my forte. So I rely on a mixture of text and image to convey my ideas. The craftsmanship of the illustration is not my main priority although the rough, basic style of the drawings is appealing to me. I associate my drawings with the kind of daily mark making that everyone does: list making, note taking, doodling, crossing out mistakes, circling preferences, defacing the walls of bathrooms, etc. I appreciate these basic and efficient ways of expressing ideas, altering information and recording events.
