Artist Statement

My work is primarily about identity: cultural identity, personal identity, and artistic identity. Much of my work looks at iconic figures and asks what we know of them. What can be told from an image of a celebrity in US Weekly? What can we really tell of their personality from a candid? These questions are at the heart of representation and contemporary portrait painting.

The drawings presented here are playing with Picasso’s Artist Studio series. I am amazed by the stereotype Picasso puts forth; the artist as a lechy woman hungry dwarf. In comparison to Picasso my studio is fairly tame and I almost never work from live models. I began to imagine an alter ego artist. This artist lives and works in a dream world, segueing from studio to canvas to dream.

This series began as 8” x 11” ink drawings on white paper, and I have recently begun to make them on color aide paper.
